Offending the Holy Spirit

August 23, 2007

I have grave concerns for the doctrine police and their determination to call everything that doesn’t line up their limited understanding of scriptures heresy. Google Counterfeit Revival and you will be amazed at who is on the doctrine police’s lists. Billy Graham was on one I looked at this weekend.

I have repeatedly said that I was once part of the doctrine police. I know the kind of arrogance and self-righteousness that attitude breeds in people. I had it. I am so grateful that the Lord in His lovingkindness and faithfulness delivered me from that.

I love the relationship I currently have with Jesus. It is unlike anything I ever had back when I was the doctrine police. I was too worried about making sure everything I was doing and believing was correct to just enjoy the Lord. Because of the arrogance of my heart, I was actually deceived into believing that all the negative words of judgment I heard were the Holy Spirit. What I realize now is that they were the product of a carnal mind fed by a self-righteous spirit.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Those are the characteristics of the Holy Spirit. Any so-called prophetic word that doesn’t have that underlying current of the Spirit’s character, isn’t from the Holy Spirit. Even words of judgment will have a redemptive edge to them. For every word of judgment I hear now, I will hear 100 words of encouragement.

The Lord is so for us, even in our immaturity and failures. He wants us to know Him. He wants us to experience Him. If He wanted to smack us, He is perfectly capable of opening up the ground in front of us and taking care of the problem. But His heart toward us is redemptive, it is filled with love. He says that He has loved us with an everlasting love and that even if a mother could forget her own child, He will never forget us, for He has carved us on the palms of His hands. He is working to fix us, not judge us.

We will indeed answer for the deeds done in this life when we stand before the Bema Seat. All our works will be put into the fire and what is left will determine our eternal reward. But I tell you that right works done with a carnal, self-righteous attitude will burn.

My concern for the current crop of doctrine police is that they are, in come cases, dangerously close to blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Matthew 12:24 says, “But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “it is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”

Jesus responded to them in Matthew 12:25 – 37:

25Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

29“Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house.

30“He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. 31And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

33“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

This passage makes it clear that attributing the works of the Holy Spirit to satan is not something the Father looks favorably on.

The Pharisees accused Jesus of doing His works through demonic power and that He was deceiving the people. It does not surprise me that the modern Pharisees make the same accusations against Jesus’ followers. But it is just as dangerous.

Here is something else to think about. The Toronto Blessing is about to turn 14. For 14 years people have been traveling to Toronto to receive something from the Lord. I know of people from Japan who have gone there 70 times, because of what the Lord does for them when they are there. Literally millions of people have gone there.

Heidi Baker is the poster child for what Toronto is all about. She and her husband have planted 7,000 churches in Africa. They care for hundreds of orphans. They have seen the dead raised and whole Muslim villages come to Jesus. They got what they are giving away in Toronto. They are laying down their lives daily in sacrifice because of the love they have for Jesus.

My question for the doctrine police is what kind of fruit is your life bearing? How much love and joy are you imparting to the body of Christ? What are you laying your life down for?

It is all about the fruit. What is the fragrance of your life before the Lord?

Hi Rahab’s place. I appreciate your comments. I first noticed your comments on another blog, and I have continued where you left off. I am about to sign off over there, as well, as there is not a lot more to say. I love Bill Johnson and the Bethel Church and all they are doing and imparting to others. Be blessed!

Hi…I have read some of your posts concerning the doctrinal wars and the controversial things that have been going on among christians. I understand your concern and the need for love to be what motivates all that we do and on this I totally agree with you. My husband and I have gone through several situations where we longed and desired to see God move and have HIS way in the church. That the HS would have the freedom to use anyone He chooses. We have been EXTREMELY persecuted by those who have been in positions of authority that would offend the HS through their jealousy because we helped liberate people to know Jesus for themselves and follow Him and not men. We also saw many young people who had been saturated by the ministry of Todd Bentley and Patricia King. And the thing that troubles me the most with the young people today subjecting themselves to Patricia King or Todd Bentley’s ministry is that they don’t know the word of God nor the HS enough to know what is of God and what is not. There is a great lack of discernment. And I have witnessed this first hand with MANY young people who follow these ministries. And really it is not just the youth but also the adults too. Because the things I am noticing is that the lust of the flesh is being mistaken for love. Or letting all things go on without discernment is being attributed to as being the love of God. And slanderous labels are given to those who object for doctrines sake as a result of others deceived by lying signs and wonders that do not have love for the truth. I have also noticed alot of false judgment coming from all sides. Doctrine does have a place and so does the supernatural signs and wonders. Some of the problems I have observed is that there is an extreme error on the side of church leaders that lord over church members from having the freedom to step out and do/say what the Spirit of God wants through the laity. The church leaders act as if they know better when alot do not. So in that extreme you have the pharisee spirit that will not allow God’s people to enter in nor do they, some of these dictators called church leaders. Then you have the other extreme groups that let anything funnel through and don’t know whether something manifesting is truely of God or not. So in the name of freedom all things are permitted because of the response of the crowd loving it who don’t know the difference either because of a lack of know Jesus and His word. And what you end up with is people who call what God says is evil good and what God says is good christians call evil…And this creates ALOT of confusion and division. Because some people will say supernatural manifestations that are of satan are of God. Or they say how wonderful and godly the person who is being used to bring in manifestions of signs that are questionable. Then you have people who want to jump on the latest fad whether its signs and wonders or heresy hunting. Either way I think the main point is that everyone should have the freedom to express their concerns about all of it. Not be stifled from raising their concerns even if they seem unloving or not knowlegable of God’s word. Also I think it is quite unloving to label all people who raise the alarm about false signs and wonders doctrine police or heresy hunters. Just as much as it is unloving to make fun of people who are deceived about the difference between lying signs and wonders and the true wonders of God. Throughout the whole bible the main 2 things that are important is to have love for the truth and the love of God. Not just one or the other only….If Jesus is THE TRUTH….And no one can come to Father except through the truth ie Jesus…and Jesus said they will know we are his disciples because we have love for one another…and God is love…Then we can have both love and truth…we are sanctified through the truth…And faith works by love…the greatest of these is love…The HS is called the Spirit of Truth who will lead and guide us into all truth…So we can have both the love of God and the truth…the purity of Spirit…And I think that these things are of the utmost importance to protect…not people but God’s word and the purity of the HS…God Bless
