Social Justice

October 25, 2008

My objection to Obama has to do with the fact that government is the worst instrument for any kind of social services there is. By it’s very nature, bureaucracy grows to consume all available resources. In the vast majority of programs that the government oversees, the bulk of the funding is eaten up by the infrastructure, rather than being used to aid people. All government does is suck up resources and provides zero value.

The church was designed by God to be the primary instrument of charity and social justice in the world. We in America have surrendered our God-given responsibility to the government, and it’s time to take it back.

Social change in this nation did not come about through the government. It came through the people of God. That has always been the case.

Slavery was an issue take up by people like Charles Finney. Oberlin College was founded to train ministers during the Second Great Awakening. It was the first institution of higher education in this nation to admit African Americans and women without segregation.

The Civil Rights Movement was not a government program. The face of that movement was a Pastor, not a politician. Dr. Martin Luther King was the head, not of a political party, but the leader of a profound revival that changed the social fabric of this nation.

The Kingdom of God is all about the superiority of the Kingdom of Heaven to the kingdoms of this world. Our call is outlined in the Lord’s prayer. Give us this day our daily bread and Let thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Living in the Kingdom is all about receiving the provision of the Kingdom (Give us this day our daily bread) and releasing it into the earth (On earth as it is in heaven).

But what is our daily bread?

Jesus said in John 4 that his bread was to do the will of the Father. Our daily bread is the same. It is in doing the will of the Father.

In the Old Testament, one of the promises in Deuteronomy that God made to Moses was that there would be no poor among God’s people. Poverty is a curse. It is a work of satan. Satan comes to steal, to kill and destroy because he is destruction. Jesus came to give life and that more abundantly. He also came to destroy the works of the devil. Poverty is a work of the devil that the church needs to destroy in our midst.

Sickness is a work of the devil. Disease and sickness are demonic. Jesus healed the sick and commanded his followers to heal the sick; therefore sickness can never be God’s will or Jesus would have been working to thwart His Father’s will. There is no record of Jesus saying, “Oh, I can’t heal you because my Father is working out character issues in your life and you need to be sick for my Father’s glory.” Jesus didn’t come to manage sickness. He came to destroy it and we need to follow in His footsteps.

Think about what the Bible says about heaven. Is there racism there? No. Is there cancer there? No. Is there poverty there? No. is there abortion there? No.

True social justice does not come about through governments. Oppression comes from government. True social justice is the Kingdom of God being brought to earth by sold out disciples of Jesus Christ who will settle for nothing less than ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.

I found the lyrics to a Larry Norman song that I thought was rather appropriate. It was written in 1972. I miss Larry.

The Great American Novel – Larry Norman

I was born and raised an orphan
In a land that once was free
In a land that poured its love out on the moon
And I grew up in the shadows
Of your silos filled with grain
But you never helped to fill my empty spoon

And when I was ten you murdered law
With courtroom politics
And you learned to make a lie sound just like truth
But I know you better now
And I don’t fall for all your tricks
And you’ve lost the one advantage of my youth

You kill a black man at midnight
Just for talking to your daughter
Then you make his wife your mistress
And you leave her without water
And the sheet you wear upon your face
Is the sheet your children sleep on
At every meal you say a prayer
You don’t believe but still you keep on

And your money says in God we trust
But it’s against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the Russians to the moon
And I say you starved your children to do it

You are far across the ocean
But the war is not your own
And while you’re winning theirs
You’re gonna lose the one at home
Do you really think the only way
To bring about the peace
Is to sacrifice your children
And kill all your enemies

The politicians all make speeches
While the news men all take note
And they exagerate the issues
As they shove them down our throats
Is it really up to them
Whether this country sinks or floats
Well i wonder who would lead us
If none of us would vote

Well my phone is tapped and my lips are chapped
From whispering through the fence
You know every move i make
Or is that just coincidence
Will you try to make my way of life
A little less like jail
If i promise to make tapes and slides
And send them through the mail

And your money says in God we trust
But it’s against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the russians to the moon
And i say you starved your children to do it
You say all men are equal all men are brothers
Then why are the rich more equal than others
Don’t ask me for the answer i’ve only got one
That a man leaves his darkness when he follows the Son
